How to Measure for Blinds & Shades
Getting the correct measurements is the most important step when ordering custom window blinds. At Modu Shade, we make measuring easy so your blinds fit perfectly.
Follow the steps below to measure your windows for the best results.
Tools You Need
Before you start measuring, keep these tools ready:
- Steel measuring tape
- Pencil and paper
- Step ladder (if required)
Tip: Always measure the window in inches or centimeters and write down the exact size.
Step 1: Choose Mount Type
Before measuring, decide how you want to install your blinds.
Inside Mount
Inside mount blinds are installed inside the window frame.
This option gives a clean and modern look.
Best for:
- Roller Shades
- Honeycomb Blinds
- Zebra Blinds
- Shangri-La Sheer Blinds
- Roman Shades
Outside Mount
Outside mount blinds are installed outside the window frame on the wall or molding.
This option is recommended if:
- Your window frame is shallow
- You want maximum light blocking
- You want the window to look larger
Measuring for Inside Mount
Measure the Width
Measure the inside width of the window frame in three places:
- Top
- Middle
- Bottom
Write down the smallest measurement.
Measure the Height
Measure the height in three places:
- Left
- Center
- Right
Write down the largest measurement.
Measure Window Depth
Measure the depth of the window frame from the front opening to the glass.
This ensures your blinds will fit properly inside the frame.
Measuring for Outside Mount
Measure the Width
Measure the width of the window opening and add 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) on each side.
This helps block more light and improves coverage.
Measure the Height
Measure from where you want the blind to start above the window to where you want it to end.
For better coverage, install blinds 10–15 cm above the window frame.
Important Measuring Tips
- Always use a metal measuring tape
- Measure twice to avoid mistakes
- Record exact measurements
- Do not round numbers
- Check the window depth before ordering
